Monaco-Ville, also known as The Rock of Monaco, is where the history of the Principality began.

The picturesque streets lined with pastel-coloured residences neighbour the Prince’s Palace, where generations of Monegasque royals have lived for centuries. The white stone Roman-Byzantine Saint Nicholas Cathedral, built in the 19th century, is a popular tourist destination and the final resting place of many members of the princely family, including Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace, who married there. Monaco-Ville is home to the Oceanographic Museum – the famous centre for marine sciences that houses much-admired aquariums – which rises majestically from the cliff-face of the Rock of Monaco.

Nearby, Saint Martin’s Gardens, with their winding paths scented by the surrounding Mediterranean and exotic plants, provide a delightful public area for strolling and admiring the sea views. In addition to its many cultural attractions, Monaco-Ville is home to government buildings, schools and a nursery. Between the souvenir shops lining the centre of the old town, a pharmacy, grocery store and post office can be found.
